PRODUCT SUGGESTIONS
This product suggestion is created to help you understand how to
use the products that I am suggesting on the products
page.
If you need some help deciding, choosing or understanding what
each remedy does in basic terms, then send me an email
and I will do what I can to help make things clear for you so you can better
decide which remedies are best for your pets.
Many of the products that I like to use have been created for
humans and so we need to adjust the products for our pets.
This page is also written to help you understand how to use
certain products. Please remember to also read my guide to food
supplementing.
Please note, as always, this information is educational in
nature. I cannot stress enough the vital role that veterinarians, especially
holistic veterinarians, play in the role of keeping your pets healthy.
I am definitely not a fan of surgeries, operations, antibiotics,
etc if they can be at all avoided but at the same time I realize that we need to
be realistic too. So if your pet is really sick, then you need professional
advice and since vets understand the workings of our pet's body, they are very
helpful.
The first thing we must do is understand how to convert human
products into products for our pets. This method is not an exact science and if
you want exact information, then your vet can do tests to get the information
you need.
Converting and Using Human Products:
Homeopathic Tinctures:
This is a homeopathic remedy in a tincture (liquid) form.
Using homeopathic tinctures and remedies on our pets is really simple. You
give the same does to a mouse as you would to an elephant. Therefore, you
follow the human dose suggestions. Usually this is 10 drops 3 times per day
but it could be different, so make sure you read the label.
When providing homeopathic tinctures, there can sometimes be
alcohol in the tincture which can be strong, but not always. Therefore, if you
want, put the suggested amount onto a spoon and let it sit for 10 minutes. The
alcohol will then evaporate.
I prefer to give tinctures on a plastic spoon so that way,
when you put the remedy in your pet's mouth, the spoon won't hurt the teeth
like a metal spoon might do.
Homeopathic Pellets:
Like homeopathic tinctures, you give the same dose as the
human dose. Homeopathy works with energy unlike herbs which work through the
digestive system.
Some pellets dissolve faster than others and obviously, we
can't expect our pets to suck on a tablet or pellet. Therefore, pellets need
to be dissolved. So what we do is put a little water on a spoon, add the
pellets and let it soak over night or until it is dissolved.
Sometimes, you can get a toothpick and just stir the pellets
to help them dissolve faster if you are in a rush.
Herbal Remedies and Nutritional Supplements:
We need to adapt these products to size of our pets. So, I
give a percentage of the human dose based on the weight of the dog or cat.
After adjusting the remedies or supplement to our pets body
size, we should also watch to make sure it is not too strong or weak.
I base the weight on a human being 100 pounds in weight.
So a pet that is....
-
100 pounds or more gets the full human dose
-
90 to 100 pounds get 90% of the human dose
-
80 to 90 pounds get 80% of the human dose
-
70 to 80 pounds get 70% of the human dose
-
60 to 70 pounds get 60% of the human dose
-
50 to 60 pounds get 50% of the human dose
-
40 to 50 pounds get 40% of the human dose
-
30 to 40 pounds get 30% of the human dose
-
20 to 30 pounds get 20% of the human dose
-
10 to 20 pounds get 10% of the human dose
Tablets and Capsules:
Tablets can sometimes, due to the jaw structure of our pets, be difficult to chew and swallow. Therefore, if you want, you can easily crush the tablet in a garlic press and add the crumbs to their food. In some situations, you don't even need to do this. Just add the tablet into the meat and let them it like that. If your dog or cat is supposed only get ½, ¼, ¾, etc of a tablet, then don't worry about being too accurate. They are easy to break as well.
With capsules, simply open the gel capsule and sprinkle the
approximate amount onto the food. You can then close the gel capsule again and
store for later use.
I sometimes buy essential fatty acid supplements in a soft gel
capsule. Usually, the soft gel capsule is eaten easily by a dog or cat. I find
that the mild stickiness of the soft gel capsule is enough for a dog or cat to
be able to hold in their mouth, chew and then swallow. I like to give
essential fatty acids to my dog in a soft gel capsule every now and then as a
treat. My dogs really like their soft gel capsules. But if your pet won't eat
a soft gel capsule, then you can simply get a toothpick and puncture the soft
gel capsule and then squeeze the oil out.
