Way back in 1994 I used to operate a pet nutrition center. I was the first person in Canada to have such a store and one of the first to have such a business in North America. Back in 1994, this whole pet nutrition and homemade diet concept was really in its infancy. In 1998, I decided to take a break from operating such a store and focussed on other interests of mine.

One of the things I did while operating my pet nutrition center was write my book Pets Need Wholesome Food Also. After I stopped operating my pet nutrition center, I put my book on the bookshelf in a manner of speaking. It was in December of 2000 that I launched my book in a web page format (ebook) which you are now reading at pet-grub.com.

When I first launched pet-grub.com, I did not provide any pet supplements through pet-grub.com. But, over the many years and after responding to thousands of emails, what I found was that many people had questions about various pet supplements, how to use them, which ones to use, what do I suggest, where to get them and so on. I also found that I had many readers from around the world who needed help finding pet supplements.

As of April of 2006, I have once again begun to provide pet supplements to my readers which I make available through my pet supplement section of my web site.

When I operated my pet nutrition center in 1994, my favourite pet supplement line was formulated by Dr. Swift, DVM. Today, I once again make Dr. Swift's supplements available to you.

I've created a special arrangement with Dr. Swift which allows me to provide his supplements to you through pet-grub.com.

I like Dr. Swift's products because they are formulated specifically for pets, have been formulated by Dr. Swift who is an excellent homeopathic veterinarian and from a practical point of view, Dr. Swift's pet supplements have been created so they are easy to give to pets (example, they are in powder form or wafer form).

I also like Dr. Swift's pet supplements because his product line covers all of the basics in a very simple way. He provides the supplements that I like to use which include a calcium supplement, digestive enzymes, glandular supplements, green food / herbal supplement and mineral supplement.

This page is designed to help you understand what products I like to use and why. You will find a list of products and suggestions on this page and when possible, I have provided links to the products I do not provide through pet-grub.com. If you find that any links have gone dead, then please let me know.

Please remember that you can read my guide to food supplements to see my approach to providing supplements to pets.

My pet supplement section also describes which supplements I like to use on a daily basis and which supplements I like to use in a more specialized way.

The following is essentially a list of products and where to get them from.

Meat Grinder:

You can grind your own meat and save some money.

The beauty of grinding your own meat is that you can save a lot of money. Why? Because whole meat is always less expensive than ground meat. When you buy whole meat and grind the meat yourself, you save money.

Herbal and Homeopathic Remedies:

You can get herbal and homeopathic remedies from your local health food store.

Ideally, you should get homeopathic or herbal remedies from your holistic veterinarian.

Other sources of homeopathic and herbal remedies include your local naturopath or homeopath.

For general health, you can use herbal remedies for assisting the liver, kidneys, lymph system, blood purification, eliminating parasites and more.

You can also use homeopathic remedies for the same purpose.

Heel Products:

The following products are really good. There are all homeopathic. But where you can get them from is something I am not sure of. Many health food stores now carry these products and you can most likely shop for them online.

  • Traumeel Cream

    • trauma, bruises, healing of the skin

  • Traumeel Tablets

    • for any type of shock or trauma... internal or external trauma... mind, body or emotional trauma

  • Adrisin

    • allergies

  • Nereel

    • nervous system, overactive, behavioural problems

In addition to the remedies above, the Heel web site explains other products and uses that may be beneficial to your pet.

Calcium:

As mentioned on my calcium page, I suggest using finely ground egg shells as the calcium supplement.

Calcium is the single most important supplement you can provide your pet with due to the fact that raw meat is high in phosphorus. Supplemental calcium must be given in order to create an ideal balance of calcium to phosphorus within your pet's body.

You have the option of making your own ground egg shell powder or you can order the EggShellent Calcium supplement through pet-grub.com.

Digestive Enzymes and Friendly Bacteria:

I personally like to give my pets pancreatic derived enzyme supplements. The other option is to give fungal (vegetarian) derived enzymes. But since our pets are natural carnivores, it makes more sense to give pancreatic derived enzymes. In addition, I simply find that more pets do better on pancreatic derived enzymes, especially those that vomit.

Since I like pancreatic derived enzymes for pets, I like to suggest using FloraZyme LP but the other option is FloraZyme EFA which contains fungal (vegetarian) derived enzymes.

Both FloraZyme LP and EFA contain high potency enzymes and friendly intestinal bacteria. As a result, these supplements will both serve your pets well.

More information is available on digestive enzymes.

More information is available about friendly bacteria (acidophilus, etc).

Essential Fatty Acids:

You can also go to you local health food store or vitamin store for essential fatty acid supplements.

Your local health food store or vitamin shop will probably provide oils or they may provide essential fatty acid supplements in soft gel capsules. My dogs personally enjoy these soft gel capsules and so I give them as a treat every now and then.

You can also make your own essential fatty acid supplement by combining pumpkin, sunflower and flax seed together.

Glandulars:

Glandulars help nourish and heal the body.

I now make available a good selection of glandular supplements through the pet supplement section of pet-grub.com.

Glandulars can be used to help prevent and heal some basic health problems. Glandulars also make a good, healthy treat for your pets.

I make available Pet G.O. Powder and Pet G.O. Wafers which are designed for general and overall health and well being. Other glandulars include Rena G.O. (kidneys), Immu G.O. (immune system) and Thyro G.O. (thyroid and endocrine system).

Minerals:

Trace Animinerals is an excellent supplement that provides your pets with missing minerals. You simply add AniMinerals to your pet's water bowl. Nothing could be more easy.

Natural Flea Control:

In the past, I used a product called Greg's Green Earth which was made from Borax. This product, when sprinkled into the carpet or sprayed onto the lawn, would eliminate fleas by dehydrating them. The powder would get stuck on the fleas and then it would begin to dehydrate the fleas.

Greg's Green Earth is no longer available but a similar product made by Dr. Goodpet is. If you are having problems with fleas, then consider getting their indoor and/or outdoor flea product.

This method makes a lot more sense than using toxic chemicals.

Creams, Lotions and Shampoos:

I order all of my creams, lotions and shampoos from Ferlow Botanicals. These products are simply amazing. The folks at Ferlow Botanicals don't use any preservatives, additives, perfumes, etc.

You can visit the Ferlow Botanicals web site to order:

  • For information on what various creams and lotions do, please review my skin care page.

Other Sources of Products:

  • Oil of Tamanu

  • Aloe Vera Juice

    • Get this from your local health food store. Please remember that it needs to be sodium benzoate (otherwise known as benzoic acid) free.

  • Vitamin C

    • My preference for vitamin C is the product called "Meta C" which is made by Nutribiotic. Meta C will be available at most vitamin stores. Most vitamin C products on the market are synthetically made, but Meta C is derived from food sources.

  • Petigreens
    • A green food supplement that helps to provide the healthy nutrients of green foods which our pets would normally get from the digestive tract of their prey
