MEAT GRINDER

A meat grinder is a great way to save money.

A meat grinder allows you to buy whole meat and then grind it yourself. Whole meat is always cheaper to buy than meat that has always been ground.

A meat grinder is actually not very expensive and considering how much it saves you, it's well worth it.

Another benefit of grinding your own meat is that when you buy whole meat you then have the flexibility of feeding meat chunks one day and ground meat another day.

Both meat chunks and ground meats have their advantages and disadvantages.

Meat Chunks:

  • More natural
  • Exercise the jaws and neck muscles more

Ground Meat:

  • Easier to mix in vegetables and supplements
  • Easier to add water to

In most situations, I use ground meat but I do feed meat chunks also. Ideally, our pets would be able to rip the meat off their prey. This is how our pets naturally get their food. While this doesn't sound very pleasant, it's just the way nature is. The pulling and ripping of the meat off the prey really stimulates their digestive system and strengthens their neck muscles. Unfortunately, we will never be able to simulate this. But when I feed meat chunks, I like to feed them meat that is neither too big nor too small for their mouth.

When I grind my own meat, I like to use no more than 20% fat in the meat. You just need to guess the fat content and so I try to get approximately 15 - 20% fat.

Many meat grinders can also be used to make pasta and nut butters.
